& the Temple of the Screaming Electron

The Temple of the Screaming Electron is one of those information sources that, if it existed at all prior to the Internet, would have existed as some raggedy, stapled together publication with a cardboard cover, printed on newsprint.  It would have published sporadically, distributing through the mail to an extremely select, small audience.  The opportunity for advertising, and to gain new readers, would have been almost exclusively through word of mouth, and “friend of a friend” distribution.

In the age of the internet, however, all that changes.  TOTSE is able to put together a proper “Temple” complete with slick graphics and an easy to use interface.  Content that at one time would have been available to only a small number of hackers gets a much wider distribution.

In many ways, TOTSE represents everything the Internet does well.  Its a special purpose destination, with fairly specific information sets available.  On the other hand, the diversity of sections shows the guidance of a single eclectic vision.  From hacking through erotica, from society through fringe, TOTSE represents the culmination of a single vision of what is valuable in the world of information.

In the past, if it existed at all, TOTSE would probably have had very limited exposure.  In today’s Internet world however, there is room even for the single vision.  When its done as professionally as TOTSE, with the unique, interesting, and eclectic selection of info, it shows off the Internet doing what it does best … pushing a single, unique vision of the world into a global audience.

  1. It’s nice to read a positive article about TOTSE. Very, very smart people can be found discussing interesting topics. Even more entertaining are the ego-incited flame wars about nothing at all.

  2. WHERE IS MY TOTSE?! It’s Tuesday, 7:11 AM here, and totse isn’t working.
If totse gets shut down… I don’t know what i’m going to do…

  10. Just found a quick comment on Wikipedia related to the totse outage …

    from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Hunter
On August 29th 2006 Totse went offline for an apparant upgrade and merger with the owners of goatse.cx. The new site promises to keep all options spread wide open.

Not sure if this means the domain name is changing too, but I expect they’ll keep Totse.com as the trademark :) … anyway, nice to know it didn;t just dissapear … hopefully this will increase bandwidth and availability

  11. Alright you guys. Just like last time Totse went down. Have fun.
